Jonathan Dove The Passing of the Year
About this performance
The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus sings modern music in one of Melbourne’s most contemporary venues, Deakin Edge in Federation Square. Enjoy a Sunday afternoon as the late-winter sun sets over the Yarra River.
- Jonathan Dove is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary music; his writing for choral forces is charged with intensity and beauty. The Passing of the Year is dedicated to the memory of his mother and sets seven texts with moving directness and a beguiling sense of the seasons’ passing.
- Dove is one of the most approachable of contemporary composers, prizing communication above obscurity, something his choral works demonstrate so well. These settings are intimate, rousing, beautifully crafted and lyrical.
- Sir Charles Villiers Stanford sets text by English poet John Milton in the 1914 work On Time. Indeed, Stanford communicates Milton’s contempt for time using a double choir to powerfully support his message.
- Deakin Edge is at the heart of the city in Federation Square. Its distinctive glass walls allow the natural light to filter in and give the space a wonderful acoustic that suits the MSO Chorus perfectly.
